From Guyana to Houston: Chef Kifer Goodluck Builds a Culinary Brand on Flavour, Faith and Determination
For Chef Kifer Goodluck, cooking is more than a profession. It is a calling that began in childhood and eventually carried him from Guyana to the heart of Houston’s competitive culinary industry.
Born in Guyana, Goodluck moved to the United States when he was five years old. Although he left the country at a young age, his Guyanese roots continue to surface in the food he prepares, from curry duck and cook-up rice to the bold Caribbean flavours that appear throughout his work.
His first independent experiment in the kitchen came at approximately 11 years old. With his mother away from home, the curious young cook decided to bake a cake entirely from scratch. It was a small act of childhood bravery, especially since his mother had previously discouraged him from cooking out of concern that he might burn down the house. Instead, that cake helped confirm something Goodluck already seemed to know. The kitchen was where he belonged.
Turning Passion into a Profession
After completing high school and moving to Houston, Goodluck enrolled at the Culinary Institute of Houston, where he studied for two years and earned his culinary degree.
Even during his training, he was not simply thinking about finding a job in someone else’s kitchen. He was already telling classmates that he intended to establish his own catering company.
Before launching the business, Goodluck completed an internship at Shell’s corporate headquarters, working in its cafeteria for more than two years. The experience gave him practical exposure to food production and professional kitchen operations, but his ambitions extended beyond his assigned role.
After work, he would return home and continue developing his business plan. On his days off, he promoted his services and steadily built the foundation for what would become Keif’s Catering.
Eventually, he made the difficult decision to leave the security of his internship and concentrate fully on building the company. Today, he serves as the founder and CEO of Keif’s Catering, a Houston-based culinary business providing catering for weddings, corporate functions, private dinners and other special events.
Guyanese Roots, Global Flavours
One of Goodluck’s strengths is his ability to move comfortably across culinary traditions. Keif’s Catering offers dishes influenced by Caribbean, Italian, Tex-Mex and contemporary American cuisine, along with baking, brunch and plant-based selections.
That versatility reflects both professional training and the experience of building a business in Houston, one of the most culturally diverse cities in the United States. Yet Goodluck’s Guyanese identity remains an important part of his culinary voice.
His online cooking content regularly features familiar Guyanese dishes, sometimes presented with his own contemporary interpretation. A plate of split peas cook-up rice, for example, was elevated with charred okra and sablefish. In another presentation, he prepared channa curry duck, preserving the bold seasoning and comfort associated with Guyanese cooking while bringing his own style to the plate. Kifer Goodluck
His approach is not limited to making food taste good. Presentation is treated as an essential part of the experience. Buffets are thoughtfully arranged, plated meals are polished and menus are designed to complement the occasion. The company describes its work as combining flavour, presentation and service to create memorable culinary experiences.
That attention to detail has earned Keif’s Catering strong customer feedback. Its Thumbtack profile currently shows a 4.9 rating from more than 170 reviews, with customers frequently recognising the company’s professionalism, food quality and responsiveness.
Building Through Persistence
Goodluck’s journey has not been without setbacks. Like many food-service entrepreneurs, he faced significant disruption during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, catering assignments disappeared and the future of the business became uncertain.
His response was rooted in the same qualities that helped him establish the company: faith, patience and determination. Goodluck has described himself as a fighter who continues moving forward even when the road becomes difficult.
That persistence has allowed Keif’s Catering to grow beyond its early beginnings. The company now handles everything from intimate dinner parties to formal celebrations and large events serving more than 100 guests.
But Goodluck’s work also extends beyond paying clients. In January 2026, he and his team helped provide meals to people experiencing homelessness in downtown Houston, demonstrating how food can serve not only as a business, but also as a form of care and community service.
Feeding More Than an Appetite
Keif’s Catering operates around the motto “Feed Your Mind Greatness,” a phrase that captures Goodluck’s belief that food can inspire, connect and transform an occasion.
His story is also part of the wider Guyanese diaspora experience. Across the world, Guyanese chefs and food entrepreneurs are preserving the flavours they inherited while introducing them to new audiences. They are proving that Guyanese cuisine can remain authentic while still evolving through professional technique, creative presentation and cultural exchange.
From the young boy quietly baking his first cake to the chef leading a recognised Houston catering company, Kifer Goodluck has built his career through talent, planning and a willingness to bet on himself.
For him, the kitchen is not merely where meals are prepared. It is where purpose, heritage and ambition come together.
